The shirt on me

How do you take a picture of yourself?  And what do you do with the arm that is in the way.   It was a lot harder than I thought.  Here is my best one taken in front of the mirror on the coat closet.  I guess it is time to look for the little remote that came with the camera.

One question... Does the shirt look too long, still?  I have shortened it by an inch, but it looks too long in the picture.
Here is the shoulder detail I adore.  I used cotton-lycra from here.  It took exactly a yard.
And Kai who also wanted his picture on my blog page.

I'm coming out of lurkdom to say it looks great! What kind of fabric did you use?

It's even cuter on! I really like the length of the shirt. I think the current style is for shirts to be a little longer and that's my personal preference as well.

Marie,
I agree with Allison! it is really cute and looks great on you. I love the length as well and tend towards that anyway. Mostly because most jeans have lower waists and that seems to balance things out again so I am not showing off to much. the gathers on the sleeves really add a nice touch. I can see that I will have to work harder to keep up with you! :o)

I have the kids take pictures of me when I need one - sometimes they turn out but sometimes they don't. I also use self timer.

I looks great on. The model has it tucked in so that is probably why it was designed so long. I can't tell from the picture if it needs to be shortened but that is always a hard call. Do "head, shoulders, knees, and toes" then decide.

Maybe you should lay it on top of your favorite old navy t and compare lengths. But sometimes it's more than just the way it looks , it needs to feel nice too. If you feel ackward in it then maybe you should take off a bit. Otherwise it looks fine to me.

Great job! Maybe I'll pull it together and make something this weekend

Ginger,
Welcome, and thank you for leaving a comment.
I used cotton-lycra from Sew Zanne's Fabric. Great quality and easy to work with.

Kim,
Get going on yours. I can't wait to see it. I will keep sewing for myself, too.

Alison,
Oh, if only I looked good tucking my shirt in and wearing a nice skinny belt... but I have never been there. Even the day I got married when I was wearing 4/6, I couldn't have pull that off.

I have been wearing the shirt all day, and I still think the balance is off. I am top heavy anyway, and the extra length emphasizes that.

I just put the Old Navy shirt (size medium, tall) on top of it like you told me to do. The bottom is a good inch longer. But the sides are an inch wider on both ends, which means 4 inches total, right? I already took some in, so I don't know what I am doing. Maybe I need a measuring lesson so I can find out what my real size is.

I am not giving up on this pattern, though. I like it too much. I am going to measure again and make another one.

I just got an idea.... you may think it is crazy but I'll try to explain

What if you shaped the bottom (kind of like a baseball jersey) where it comes up a little higher on the sides then curves down to the front and back. That might soften the look. The top is so pretty but I'm afraid you are bothered by the bottom that kind of ends so straight like a tube's top. That way you get the length for modesty but it won't cut you straight in half.

I wouldn't take it in all 4 inches - do it gradually. The other thing you could do is take it in at the waist and let is flare out a bit towards the hem. That may soften the look as well.

Honestly it looks great but again, I believe it is more important for our clothes to feel right. Once you are there at it feeling right you'll want to wear it everyday and make a bunch more.... I think you are just about there.

You actually may have to delete this whole comment because I'm tired and may not know what I'm talking about. I'm still waiting for our girls/sewing get a way then I could help you with fit and you could help me with Japanese translation and perfect plackets

Alison,
I will try your two ideas. Thank you.
I am looking forward to our sewing get-a-long as well. Until then, we will have to keep doing the virtual sewing-along.

Adrianne,
It must be the angle playing tricks on your eyes. I am still battling tummy goo.

Marie,
another idea to soften the waist and make it a bit girly, add a light gather in the side seams. just up the side a little ways, not all the way. just a thought.

Thanks, Kim! I actually own a few pieces that have that, and I love it. The shirt is in the laundry basket, but I will give it a try as soon as I do laundry. In the mean time, I am re-working the pattern. I found a size conversion chart and found out that Japanese size 11 is European 38, so I will start from there.

It looks even better on you than on the hanger. I wish you could teach me how to sew like that! I'll stick to my strait lines for now.
